No Fate - December 2003 Demo

If you're a fan of No Fate already from the "Never" and "Schizome" demo clips, then you will be floored by the new songs, "Change" and "As I Burn". I could not believe the drastic increase in artistry achieved by the new demo. I rarely am so completely shocked by an already excellent band making such unbelievable progress in their work.

I was fortunate enough to receive the demo the day before I left for home on winter break. After packing the car, I pulled out the CD and popped it into the car stereo. The CD cover and label were simple and unobtrusive, though I had to laugh at the "Duplication of this CD is not only legal but encouraged" notice at the bottom. Clearly, this band is working with the current state of the industry to get their music out to the world.

As I started to drive home, I figured I'd listen to the demo once or twice through before switching off to another record. Nope. I listened to that CD all the way home; I have never in my life been so immediately captivated by two single songs. The reason is very obvious – No Fate has produced two songs that have such a dramatic quality and procession, that no drum line, no vox, no guitar riff becomes tired. Each song in itself is a journey, and a perfect blend of style. No Fate is unlike anything else I could easily point to. Comparisons range from 3 Doors Down to Ozzy; this is truly a unique sound.

As I listen to "Change" I can close my eyes and easily picture a sold-out house with fans lost in the mass, driven in force by the strength of this rock anthem. "As I Burn" is quite different; a calmer, more stately rock song, with haunting vocals. But the intrinsic power underlying the music is undeniable.

No Fate is an established figure in the Chicago rock scene, and they will be releasing their much awaited EP sometime this spring. I expect great things from this band, after having already proven their ambition to succeed, and such a mastery of their art.
