Bobby Hewitt - Interview [D1 Music]

Interview with Orgy's drummer about why he left, what he did with Snake River Conspiracy, and why he came back to the band.

Valdyr: I guess the thing that's on everyone's mind foremost is exactly what has happened in the time you were apart from Orgy. I figure that instead of asking questions that you may or may not want to answer, that I'd just give you a chance to tell us in your own way, what you did in the time you left Orgy and went to Snake River Conspiracy, then came back again.
Bobby: Well, I have two kids, and with that, just with the way things were getting dysfunctional with the band...I had responsibilities to my family, so I took a break. Jason from SRC wanted me to play with them; he had been after me for awhile. I thought I was done with music, but I'd always been a fan of SRC, so yeah...I heard the new stuff, loved it, and decided to start playing. They were looking for a guitarist, so my twin brother joined, too. We started recording, but there was no label, so again I was in the same spot: leaving home, doing rehearsal, but no money. I loved it, but I had to quit. In the meantime I'd been shooting video. My company is Image Industry...me and my brother have been making videos and doing still photography. Before I left Orgy we were working on the music for the third album - and Jay kept working and things kept happening. I didn’t talk to Jay for a year and a half...honestly, I was really resentful and upset, and as much as I tried to ignore it, it was really affecting me. Finally, I came to terms with it, and I was ok. I called Jay out of the blue one day and told him that I was done with being pissed. And he was totally freaked out that I called. Eventually, everyone came back to the table – it was a second chance. I know we still have our fans out there. It's gonna be good...the music is amazing.

Valdyr: Do you have any regrets concerning your time away?
Bobby: I'm glad I took some time away...no regrets. I went through a hard time...I went from being way up there, to working a day job. I've played in bands all my life, and that was my lifestyle...I think I wish I would have gone back to school and did some learning, but I had to work.

Valdyr: Is there any chance you might still work with SRC in the future?
Bobby: I would love to, and Jason actually called me the other day...yeah, if I had time and there was money I would totally do that. Jason is totally cool and has always been supportive of me. But I've gotta support my two kids.

Valdyr: So what are you looking forward to with the release of PSP? Can we expect anything cool in regards to music videos and touring?
Bobby: I am looking forward to touring but not to leaving my kids. I would love to do a video and just get back out there.

Valdyr: Which of the new songs might you pick as your favorite?
Bobby: "Vague". The thing that made this album different is that we just sat around and played. Before, we really relied on programmed stuff. I love what we've come up with.

Valdyr: We've been keeping track of side projects of other members of Orgy; do you have anything else you're working on right now that you'd like to tell us about?
Bobby: Musically, no, but I've been working on my company and directing music videos. We're getting a website up, and that's what both my brother and I want to get into. We're still working on the site - once it's done it'll be on punkstatikparanoia.com for the fans to see it. I've been working on things for SRC and Orgy, as well as other projects.

Valdyr: So what have you been doing lately in your free time, if you have any, now that the recording is finished?
Bobby: I've just been at home with my kids. Still working on a couple of videos, but mainly just spending time with the kids.

Valdyr: During the time since Orgy first released Candyass up until now, is there anything you've learned or discovered that you'd like to share with the fans, either about music or life in general?
Bobby: That goes back to the regrets a little bit...I regret that I didn't continue studying or learning...film school, drumming...I just learned on my own. No matter how much fun you wanna have, you need to go and learn. You wanna have fun, but you won't be fine with just that...later on you'll be screwed. You need to keep learning if you really love what you're doing.

Valdyr: What do you think the future holds for Orgy's music? Is it too early to ask about a possible fourth record?
Bobby: I dunno...we've been away from each other for two years...we just had our first photo shoot, and we'll be playing together for the first time in two years. It really depends on how things go...that will dictate how things go from here. I predict it will continue to be heavy, and I hope there will be no pressure on the look, but more focus on the music.

Valdyr: That's all the questions I had for you...is there anything else you'd like to say to the fans?
Bobby: Please come to our shows and buy the records. Watch out for Image Industry. We're back...come and check out the new Orgy!

Valdyr: Thank you so much for your time!
