Otto's Daughter - The Becoming 001 EP

Hardcore Otto's Daughter followers will have heard versions of all of the songs on this EP, either as demos or completed tracks - but nothing can detract from the purity of the final production of this EP. The songs are finished, polished, and cohesive, and a great fore-runner to the next album. The band has grown considerably from their first two hit albums, and created a sound totally unique and unmatched. Singer Jacqueline Van Bierk has a beautifully brutal way of encapturing some of humanity's basest emotion.

The EP contains the songs "Mars", "Angels", "Losing You", "Don't Care", and "All I Ever Wanted." The first three tracks are available for streaming and downloading from Otto's Daughter's myspace profile, and all three are fantastic in-your-face rock songs. But out of the three, "Angels" has always held my attention. From the first time I heard the oriental drum beats of the original demo, "Angels" has stood out as a new an innovative way of taking a traditional sound and meshing it with today's modern rock. This new version of the song has grown considerably since the demo, and while in some ways I appreciate the original more, the final version is more on the level of the surrounding songs.

"Don't Care", the fourth song - and a ball-busting one at that - has also grown since the original demo. And if I remember correctly, this version of the song will be unique to this EP, and the old will return on the next album. This version, like the new version of "Angels", meshes well with the musical theme of the EP, and is a fresh reinvention of a damn good song.

The EP closes on a much different note from the classic 'rocking-out' feel of the first four tracks. "All I Ever Wanted" is a slow, brooding, twisted track that immediately takes the listener to some of the lower points of life and emotion, once again showing the depth and diversity of this band.
